i think that one reason the story is being told by chino is because he is the main character the story focuses on. Maybe because chino's life is beginning to mirror that of bodega's when he was younger in the sense that bodega had vera, then she left him and he's trying to change things to get her back. Chino had blanca and she left him, so more than likely he will try to change something to get her back, like what bodega did.
Joey I was pissed when I noticed you beat me to first comment, but then i thought about it and realized I would have had nothing to write about. With that being said, I agree wit Joey’s idea about how Chino was follwing Bodega's footsteps. Also I think Ernesto Quinonez's intentions were to have the main character try to help another important character with his dream. In this case it's Chino trying to help Bodega's dream.
I like joey's idea of the "mirror effect" It seems that Chino is falling into the same trap (his wife leaving him) but he is going to take the right way out and make thing better I think. I also think that the author wants the story to be told from a different perspective than Bodega's. He wanted to make the main character a "good guy".
I agree whole heartly with Joey. I feel that Chino's life is exactly like Bodega's when he was younger. Yet the only difference is that Chino see's what seperates his current life to the past life of Willie Bodega in a sense that he knows what is important to him and he wont let it go as easily as Bodega
spinelli just wanted to say whole heartedly but yeah i agree with Joey. This book is told my Chino but Chinos life revolves around Bodega and his actions. if chino never met bodega then the this book would have no conflict. And joey is right Blanca is just like Vera they both left their loves ones who knows if Blanca is going to come back like Vera did.
I think the story is told from Chino's point of view and not Bodega's because this way you get to see it from an outsiders perspective. You get to see how people feel about him rather then how he feels about himself and his justifications for what he's doing. I think the book wouldn't really have the same effect if it was told from Bodega's point of view.
Hmmm so i dont know if it'd be right to post on this blog now without starting off a little something like.... i agree with joey's comment :) haha although it was said by joey(little questionable :-P) i'd have to concur in the sense that in this story it was necessary to b told through Chino and not Bodega. Through Bodega i think the book would sound a little more selfish because Bodega is really only looking out for himself but using other characters in the book as pawns on the giant chessboard that is life. He manipulates people for his own personal benefits sometimes without them knowing whereas Chino generally is just a good guy who got caught up in the wrong situation but i believe will come out on top in a better situation then Bodega because unlike young Willie he is not going to let the love of his life slip through his fingers -Jeff Straub (lol i didn't know that name was the one being seen so i guess im ganna go by AllBoutMindgames)
chino is telling the story cause he see's both sides of "the bodega dream" he knows what bodega wants to do is the right thing for the neighborhood, but chino also see's how the bad effects that he causes to some people.
The book Bodega Dreams is told by Chino because he represents the youth of Bodega trying to live his dream. Chino lives a similar life to Bodega, his love left him like Bodega, drugs are involved in his life, and now even cops are on his back. I think Chino is a great character to tell the dream and story of Bodega. Also I think Quinonez sees himself in Chino, which allows him to completely be telling the story through a character in the book making the dream more appealing to the reader in my opinion. Chino is an exccellent character to tell Bodega's story.
think that it is chino telling the story and not bodgea because he is dead and chino is still alive. so he is telling us the story cause bodega cant cause he is dead..
i think that the story is being told by chino becuase you get to see more then what goes on in bodegas life, you get to see it from the outsiders perspective.
I believe that the reason that Chino is telling the story is so that you can get a different point of view. If the story was being told by Bodega you would only see things the way he sees things by chino telling the story you get to see how Bodega affects everyone.
i think that Chino is telling the story because Ernesto wants us to see Bodega how everyone else sees him and if he was to tell the story, he might lose some of the danger he has associated with him.

I agree with joey also in that he is younger. It is better showing the ups and downs of someone living in the present, rather then the past.

I think that chino tells the story because Bodega is indeed in the past, and chino is the new bodega.

You are all awesome - great answers!!

cause chino is the main character and his life resembles the life of willie bodega
I think that the story is being told by Chino and not Bodega so you can get a feel what Bodega is really like from someone elses point of view.
