As we have discussed, "Reinvention" is a major theme in the novel. Characters, both major and minor, have repeatedly tried to become someone new. Willie Bodega is a prime example of this, but as the book continues, it is becoming harder and harder to really understand who Willie Bodega or "Izzy" is. What is your impression of Willie Bodega? If you had to write a character sketch of Bodega, how would you write it? Who exactly is he??

First post. first time for every thing. i think willi bodega is someone who didn't know wht he wanted till he met vera. and ocne he met her he knew what he wanted. but when she left he reilized wht he had to do (reinvent) him self. so that is what he did he worked hard to make the hood better and to make him self better
I think the Bodega was a lot different before Vera came into his life and then he fell in love; and when she left he couldn't figure out why and he started blaming it on how he was. I think this led him to reinvent himself and start something knew. He wanted to make El Barrio a safer and better environment while also gaining respect from the people that live there. In my opinion Willie Bodega isn't a bad guy, he's trying to make a difference he's just getting caught up in a bad war. I also believe that he is a very complicated man, much more then can be figured out by just reading the book. He is the type of man you would have to analyze to fully understand. Even once we finish the book I still don't think we will know what Bodega is all about.
Willie Bodega is a man who I believe does not even understand himself. He clearly loves Vera and the good side of him comes out aroundd her. On the flip side he does try to help the town out but does it with illegal money and actions. I think in general he is a good guy just a bit lost not always knowing what is right and whats wrong. Bodega is a complex man.
i think he was just a confused young soul, on a journey to find someone to comfort him in a way that he has never been comforted before. he is a very complicated and confusing person.
Bodegga was always the way he was, it was just hidden under the rough exterior of the drug dealer. Any time he talked about Vera he would become a new person and when he wanted to finally impress her, he brought out the hidden Bodega he wouldn't be able to show without her being there. I think he has many many different parts and charecters almost that make up who he is and i think throughout the book, all the layers with be peeled away to show the real Bodega.
I agree with ant that Bodega doesn't really understadn himself. He is love struck with Vera but is involved in a life he can not get out of. He needs to choose and he doesnt wanna make that decision. He needs to have muscle around the community to show his strength but he needs to show kindness to Vera. He is 2 different people that he needs to mold into one compelte person,
i think that he is ambitious and that when vera came into his life he changed to impress her.
Willie Bodega is a man with a big dream. He's a giving soul who wants to better other people's lives as well as his own. But I think he's a different person since Vera showed up. He's acting like a teenager again and all he seems to care about is Vera. I think once she is his, he could lose focus for a while. He seems to be having Nazario take care of his work more and more. I think it's great that he has brought himself up from nothing, but in order to keep everything going the way it is, he needs to stay focused. Bodega is definately one confusing guy.
I think that Willie Bodega is a twisted manipulator. I think that he has good intentions but they way he uses people and the way he makes his money by selling drugs is wrong. I do not believe that the ends justify the means in this case because in the process of making a neighborhood a better place to live he is also filling it with drugs. I think that he should not use people like he uses chino as well.
willie bodega has two prominent personalities that we have seen so far. On one side he is a drug dealer, who seems to have little or no remorse for the things that he has done. On the other side, you see a completely different person in him that vera seems to bring out in him. When he's around her he seems more compassionate, and much kinder to other people.
I think that Bodega is a different person now that he has Vera. I think that he reinvented himself by really wanting to reinvent spanish harlem. Bodega has two different sides to him the side with Vera that is kind and loving, and then the street side of him that is tough.
Bodega is an enigma. I see him mainly as a con-man. He is a person who seems one way but deep down he is different. I believe that he manipulates people into doing things that he wants. All the stuff that he has done for Spanish Harlem i believe if for Vera, mainly i dont think he is as much of a saint as everyone makes him out to be.
Wow - Spinelli thinks Bodega is really bad - anyone wanna respond to that????
i think that we didnt really meet the real bodega until we meet vera when she came to town he showed a bodega who we have never seen. i think acts the part of being tough because he is a drug dealer and he needs to to get by in life.
bodega is pretty confused in himself, he has trouble understanding what he does and why he does it. he is so deep in the business that he runs that he cant get out.
